Penofin® Products FAQs

PENOFIN products were designed with quality in mind, and contain the finest ingredients.

We are often asked what makes PENOFIN different or better than other products. To answer that, we have compiled a list of the most common questions asked about the PENOFIN product line.

Q. Can I paint or varnish over a PENOFIN surface?
A. Yes. Allow 7-10 days drying time for surface to be completely dry and cured. Water- or oil-based products can be used.

Q. Can I use PENOFIN on furniture?
A. Yes. PENOFIN has a Gold-Line of 10 interior finishes.

Q. Can I use PENOFIN on a cutting board or wooden bowl?
A. No. PENOFIN is not a food-grade product.

Q. How does it compare to other stains on the market?
A. View PENOFIN's blotter tests at www.penofin.com. PENOFIN penetrates better than any other product on the market. It is the only product with Brazilian Rosewood Oil. PENOFIN is one of the few products containing transoxide pigments, the colorant developed to give automobiles their tough finish and resist ultraviolet damage.

Q. Is it necessary or advisable to back-prime siding?
A. Yes. With PENOFIN.

Q. I want to put a clear finish on my deck/home. What do I use?
A. We have a Clear in both Blue and Red Label. The Clear tone products allows the wood to weather naturally. Our complete product line was formulated to show the beauty of the wood.

Q. After applying PENOFIN, I have areas that are shiny and areas that are not. What is wrong and how do I fix it?
A. In most cases this indicates overapplication. After 24 hours drying time, wash the surface with Pro-Tech Cleaner; with some heavy scrubbing this should correct the problem. Rinse well.

Q. How long will it last on my deck/house?
A. On a horizontal surface, PENOFIN Red Label may be expected to perform for an average of 9-24 months, and 2-5 years on a vertical surface. The time will vary depending on the percentage of sunlight and weather. Our premium lines are formulated to last longer.

Q. If I apply one color of PENOFIN (Example: Transparent Redwood) and I want to go with another color of PENOFIN when reapplication is needed (Example: Sierra), can I do that?
A. Yes. All PENOFIN colors contain the same ingredients, just different amounts of colored pigments. However, you will not be able to make the surface lighter by applying a lighter shade. As always, you should test a small area before use.

Q. Can PENOFIN be applied over another stain?
A. No, not without proper surface preparation. Recommendation is to clean surface and remove previous finish by sanding. The exception is Penofin over Penofin.

Q. How long does PENOFIN take to completely dry and cure into the wood?
A. Penofin dries to the touch in 3 hours and is serviceable in 12 hours; it is fully cured in 7 days.

Q. Do you have anything to cover pressure-treated wood?
A. Any PENOFIN colors can be used on any type of wood. For pressure-treated wood we recomend 99% UV PENOFIN for Pressure-Treated Wood TM in Rainer, Yosemite, and Tahoe, or 90% UV Blue Label Chestnut or Sable.

Q. How can I tell if the wood is too hot to apply PENOFIN?
A. If the surface is hot to the touch, it is too hot to apply PENOFIN. Be particularly careful in the heat of the day. Product can flash and dry on the surface without penetrating.

Q. What do I do if my wood has mildew growing on it?
A. Use Penofin Pro-Tech Cleaner.®

Q. Does PENOFIN bead water?
A. No, it does not need to. Penofin has no wax by-products. Moisture passes through the wood as vapor. No warping, cracking, or peeling.

Q. What about my deck getting wet?
A. There is nothing wrong with your wood getting wet (it was a tree). However, standing water can lead to rot. PENOFIN will help to protect your wood by coating the wood fibers.

Q. How long should I let my new deck season before I apply PENOFIN?
A. We recommend applying PENOFIN immediately without allowing the wood to season for maximum protection.
